This policy explains what data Gusto collects, why, and what happens to it. The short version: we collect what's needed to cook with you, we don't run ads, we don't sell your data, and you can delete everything from inside the app.
The Gusto app and chefgusto.app are operated by Techworx BV (“we”, “us”), a company established in Belgium, which is the data controller for the processing described here. You can reach us at [email protected].
1. What we collect
Account data. You can use Gusto anonymously or sign in with Apple or Google. When you sign in, we receive a user ID and, depending on what you share with us, your email address and name. If you use Sign in with Apple, we also store the token needed to revoke that sign-in when you delete your account, as Apple requires.
Cooking profile. The preferences you set in the app: skill level, household size, dietary restrictions, cuisine preferences, and measurement system. These exist so recipes fit you.
Your content. The recipes Gusto generates for you, your chat messages refining them, your saved cookbook and collections, grocery lists, ratings, and any recipes you share via a link.
Voice, in the moment. In hands-free Cook Mode, the app listens for your commands. Audio snippets are sent to our servers to be transcribed and are not stored after transcription. Listening only happens while Cook Mode is active.
Photos, in the moment. If you scan your fridge or pantry, the photo is analysed to recognise ingredients and is not stored — it's discarded once the analysis is done.
Purchase status. If you subscribe to Gusto Pro, we receive your subscription status (e.g. when it expires and which store it came from) so we can unlock Pro features. Payment details stay with Apple, Google, and our billing provider — we never see your card number.
Service logs. Our servers keep operational logs and internal usage metrics (such as which feature was used, token counts, and latency) to keep the Service reliable and to manage costs. We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs in the app.
2. How we use your data
- To generate and refine recipes tailored to your profile.
- To guide you through cooking with voice (transcribing your commands and speaking steps aloud).
- To sync your cookbook, collections, and grocery lists across your devices.
- To manage your subscription and apply free-tier limits.
- To keep the Service secure, reliable, and affordable to run.
- To comply with legal obligations.
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on the performance of our contract with you (providing the Service), our legitimate interests (keeping the Service secure and operational), and legal obligations as the bases for this processing.
3. AI processing
Gusto's recipes and voice features are powered by large language models. When you ask for a recipe, refine one in chat, speak a command, or scan your fridge, the relevant content (your request, applicable profile preferences, the audio snippet, or the photo) is sent from our servers to Google's Gemini API for processing. Our servers sit in between — the app never talks to the AI provider directly, and our AI providers process this data to provide the service to us, not for their own advertising.
4. Who we share data with
We share data only with the service providers we need to run Gusto:
- Google (Gemini API) — AI processing of recipe requests, chat, voice transcription, speech audio, and ingredient photos.
- Supabase — authentication, database, and storage hosting.
- RevenueCat — subscription management, together with Apple's App Store and Google Play, which handle the actual payments.
These providers act under agreements that restrict what they can do with the data. Some of them process data outside the European Economic Area; where they do, transfers are protected by appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. We don't sell your personal data, and we don't share it with advertisers.
5. How long we keep it
Your account data and content are kept for as long as you have an account, so your cookbook is there when you come back. Voice audio and scanned photos are not retained at all, as described above. Operational logs and usage metrics are kept only as long as needed for reliability and cost monitoring. When you delete your account, your data is deleted as described below.
6. Deleting your data
You can delete your account directly in the app (Profile → Delete account). This permanently removes your account, recipes, conversations, cookbook, collections, grocery lists, ratings, and share links, and revokes your Apple sign-in where applicable. You can also delete individual recipes at any time. If you can't access the app, email us and we'll handle it.
7. Your rights
Where the GDPR applies, you have the right to access, correct, delete, and receive a copy of your personal data, to restrict or object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on it. To exercise these rights, use the in-app controls or contact us at [email protected]. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority — in Belgium, the Data Protection Authority.
8. Security
Your data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with access controls. API keys for AI providers live only on our servers, never in the app. No system is perfectly secure, but we design Gusto so that the most sensitive things — your voice and your photos — aren't kept at all.
9. Children
Gusto is not directed at children. You must be at least 16 years old (or the age of digital consent in your country) to create an account. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll let you know in the app or by other reasonable means before the change takes effect. The effective date at the top always tells you when it was last updated.
